About Chapman Hutchison

Bruce Hutchison - Director

B.E. (Civil), M.I.E. (Aust) NPER

Bruce graduated from University of New South Wales in Civil Engineering after which he was engaged at the Department of Main Roads NSW working on the Kings Cross Road Tunnel, the North Western Freeway & subsequently in the Bridge Design Section.

From there he ventured overseas & into more structural work at Ove Arup & Partners, London office for 2 years where a key highlight was the Telford Gardens 22 multi storey towers over the Kowloon Bay Mass Transit Depot in Hong Kong. On returning to Australia he continued as a structural design engineer at both Miller, Milston & Ferris, & later Bond, James, Laron & Murtagh. These years saw him work across the full range of domestic, commercial & industrial building types including multi-storey office blocks, large span industrial development and schools, with both design & project management responsibilities.

In 1983 Ian Chapman invited Bruce to join his small but growing practice as the senior design engineer. Ian subsequently appointed Bruce as an associate director & finally asked him to become a full partner where he has taken over the successful management & administration of the consulting structural practice.

Bruce has been and continues to be involved in various pro bono organisations, such as Partner Housing Australia, for developing countries, and has served at board level on the industry committee - Association of Structural Engineers – as well as delivering ad hoc lectures to engineering university students.
